Fitz Lee Hardin

September 30, 1926 — August 6, 2017

Fitz Lee Hardin, Jr., 90, of Charleston, SC, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2017. His funeral service will be held Friday, August 11, 2017 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends following the service in the Bethel Fellowship Hall. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Born September 30, 1926 in Chester, South Carolina, Fitz was the son of the late Lucile Kennedy Hardin and Fitz Lee Hardin. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris (Dottie) Phillips Hardin and their two children: son, Fitz Lee Hardin III (Suzanne) of Greenville, SC, and daughter, Mary Caroline Hardin Fisher (Scott), of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Rachael Anne Hardin and Bryan Rutledge Hardin, as well as three generations of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Lucile Hardin Aiken.

Fitz served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 and graduated from Clemson University in 1949. While attending Clemson, Fitz cultivated life-long friendships with fellow alumni across generations. As a devoted Clemson football fan, Fitz could often be found tailgating in Clemson with friends and extended family. Fitz retired from CIBA-Geigy after 32 years in pharmaceutical sales.

Fitz was a long-standing and dedicated member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he shared his faith and love of music while serving in the Bethel Chancel Choir. Throughout his service in the choir, Fitz's voice enriched the worship experience for the congregation. For over a decade, Fitz was also a volunteer for and faithful patron of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. When Fitz was not volunteering or singing in the choir, he enjoyed traveling the world with Dottie, family, and friends.

Fitz was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His unwavering positivity was ever-present in his words, smile, and good-natured laugh. He will be deeply missed and remembered always for his legacy of faith, love, and kindness.
