Ferris Kimball Joyner

November 2, 1949 — November 25, 2017

Ferris Kimball Joyner, Jr. (Kim), husband of Derek C. Riggs, was born in Columbia, SC, on November 2, 1949, to Thelma Joyner and Ferris K. Joyner, Sr. He passed away Saturday, November 25, 2017, in Charleston after a well-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Kim excelled through the public school system in Columbia and Wofford College in Spartanburg. Because of his intellect, reasoning, and steady demeanor he was consistently chosen to lead various school activities, student governments, the Wofford chapter of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and numerous other associations. After graduating from Wofford, Kim served in the S.C. Air National Guard, and then enrolled in the U.S.C. School of Law. Kim practiced law in Colorado before joining Sun Oil, and then Mobil Oil (later ExxonMobil), in Texas.

As an attorney in the oil industry, Kim quickly rose through the ranks and traveled the world and resided in Dallas, Washington, D.C., Rochester, Houston, and abroad in Norway, Qatar, and Singapore; he made life-long friends in each locale. But even as he jetted around the world, Kim always returned to South Carolina to be with family and friends. When retirement was approaching, Kim and Derek bought a second home on Edisto Beach. Once he retired from ExxonMobil, they built a home in Charleston and another at Lake Summit, N.C., where floating in the lake with cold beverages and hotly contested Cornhole games was the order of the day.

While they married each other in New York in 2014, Derek has been by Kim's side through the last 34 years of travel (for both business and pleasure), sharing adventures and a love for a long line of perfect pet dogs; Buckey and Houston currently rule the roost.

In addition to Derek, Kim is survived by his sister, Linda Ayers (Avery) of Columbia, and brother, Larry Joyner (Leslie) of Spartanburg; a "sister-cousin," Jeanette Ross of Columbia; and his nieces and nephews Liz Cannon (Cameron) of Denver, CO, Susanne Kramer (Chris) of Lawrence, KS, Lauren Vicars (Wes) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Will Joyner (Ridgley) of Wayne, PA, Alex Joyner (Robyn) of Mt. Pleasant, Tiffany Cribb (Marty) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Amy Kohler (John) of Columbia, and Ashley Roy (Andy) of Charleston. His caring spirit, generosity, dry sense of humor, insightful mind, and unerring moral compass will be terribly missed by all who knew him.

A service of remembrance and celebration of Kim's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2017, at the J. Henry Stuhr Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. The family will receive friends at the Chapel beginning at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Joyner Endowed Scholarship Fund, Wofford College, 429 North Church St., Spartanburg, SC, 29303, or a charity of one's choice.
