Faith Jefferson Hohloch died peacefully Saturday, May 12, 2012. She was born on September 26, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Helen Jefferson and Frederick Hohloch.
In 1956 having earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Cornell University she began serving as a staff nurse at New York-Cornell Hospital. Doctor Hohloch earned her master's degree in 1962 from Columbia University in New York City. She served as Head Nurse of Surgery during these years. Hohloch was awarded both Assistant and then Associate Professorships at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1972. It should be noted that publishing and excellence in teaching, committee work and administration are required for such promotion. In 1974 she earned a Doctorate in Education from Indiana University. She then applied her commitment to nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia serving as Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Nursing from 1974 to 1979.
Dr. Hohloch located to Charleston, SC in 1979 assuming the position of Associate Dean of the College of Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1979 to 1984 and then Interim Dean from 1984 to 1986. She was a strong proponent of advanced practice nursing and graduate education in nursing. She brought a keen intellect for analysis and the steps in research methodology which was reflected in the large number of master degree and doctoral candidates whom she mentored.
Completing her work with the College of Nursing she moved to the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina working in Geriatrics from 1986 to 1991.
Over the years she was seen as a superb editor and collaborated on innumerable articles, journals and texts.
Her passions were the education of nurses and international travel.
As evidenced of her love of nursing she established the Jefferson Scholarship Endowment which has awarded scholarships to students pursuing a career in nursing since 2003. This scholarship is administered by the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina.
