Evelyn was born in Easley, SC to Robert G. Lesley and May Galloway Lesley. Upon graduating from Easley High School, she married the love of her life, Nelson Garrett. They were blessed with deep love and adoration for one another for over 70 years. Evelyn and Nelson were among the founders of Northgate Baptist Church in Greenville where they both taught Sunday School. Evelyn taught Bible classes and Nelson was a deacon. In her youth, Evelyn worked in a 5 and 10 cent store, assisted a dentist and worked in nursing at Shriners Hospital. While her husband was serving in the U.S. Army in WWII, Evelyn worked in the Signal Corps in Baltimore, MO. In the early 1950's, Evelyn opened her own business, Church Supplies, in Greenville which led to the opening of The House of Old Books. Her love of old rare books and manuscripts led to her career in the antiques business. She traveled all over the mid and eastern U. S. exhibiting in fine antiques shows for over 50 years. In Charleston, Evelyn began having antiques shows at County Hall, then moved to the new Gaillard Auditorium where she had shows for another 40 years. One of her favorite events that she created and managed was The Lowcountry Christmas Festival which was a special event where literally 1000's of Charlestonians participated in creating a happy winter wonderland. It was the largest attended trade show in SC in it's early years. Evelyn had a very long, wonderful life full of exciting adventures. She had many, many friends and adopted family members who filled her life with love.
