Eva Griffith Cathey, 88, of Columbia, South Carolina, was born January 16, 1928 and entered into eternal rest, Wednesday, July 13, 2016. She was the ninth of twelve children of the late Thomas Moore Griffith Sr. and Annie Mabel Garrison Griffith of Davidson, North Carolina. She was the last of their children born in the family home, and she always felt her home to be there.
She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 51 years, Dr. LeConte Cathey of Columbia, South Carolina. Eva received her BS in General Sciences from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and her M.A.T. in education with an emphasis in geology from the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She taught high school and middle school science in Aiken and Columbia, S.C. until retirement. She has always been a keen lover of music; she played piano for her childhood church in Davidson, directed the children's choir and sang in the adult choir at Aiken First Presbyterian Church. Until recently, she played piano for her Sunday class at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia. She was a Christian. She led by example and continuously worked to help those around her. She was frugal but generous to those in need. She loved her children, brothers and sisters. She was loved and will be missed.
Mrs. Cathey is survived by her five children; Kristine Yeager (Joe) of Bethesda, MD, Carl Thomas Cathey (Cindy) of Salem, S.C., John L. Cathey (Julie) of Aiken, S.C., Emily Sexton (Walter) of McClellanville, S.C., and Andrew Cathey of St. Petersburg, FL. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
