Eugene Johnson Deveaux

Eugene Johnson DeVeaux, 95, born May 14, 1915, in Charleston, South Carolina, died Friday, February 11, 2011.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Roulain Johnson DeVeaux and their three sons: John Porteous DeVeaux of Folly Beach, South Carolina, Pierre Roulain DeVeaux of Washington, DC and Eugene Johnson DeVeaux, Jr. "Chug" of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.    Private graveside services to be conducted later in Magnolia Cemetery.  ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.  Mr. DeVeaux was educated at Craft and Bennett Elementary Schools in Charleston, the Charleston High School and received his Bachelors degree in 1936 from the College of Charleston. He is an Army veteran of World War II.  For many years, he was with the Weather Bureau in Charleston where he received the U.S. Department of Commerce Silver Medal for Meritorious Service and had a paper published in the department's "Monthly Weather Review" entitled 'Meteorological Trends and the Apparent Rise in Sea Level along the South Carolina Coast.'  After leaving the Weather Bureau, he taught at Lambs Elementary School until retiring in 1980.  For fifty-six years, the DeVeaux family lived at Station 9 on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.  Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
