Ernest Bainbridge Lipscomb, III, 81, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Lynda Miller Lipscomb entered into eternal rest Sunday, February 26, 2023. His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street at 3:00 p.m. Interment following will be held in Magnolia Cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Ernest was born July 17, 1941 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, son of the late Ernest B. Lipscomb and Betty McCabe Lipscomb. He went to Ole Miss where he played on the tennis team and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Ernest next earned a law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He later went on to earn a Master of Laws in Patents from The George Washington University. During his distinguished 50-year career as a Patent Attorney, Ernest worked for several esteemed companies and law firms such as Westvaco, Revlon, Alston & Bird, Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms. He was passionate about his career and wrote Lipscomb’s Walker on Patents an 11-volume treatise on patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Additionally, Ernest served as an adjunct professor, teaching patent law at the University of South Carolina School of Law. Upon retirement, he moved to his beloved Charleston where he was an active member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, the Historic Charleston Foundation, and served on committees at the Carolina Yacht Club.
Ernest is survived by his son, Charles Bainbridge Lipscomb (Rebecca) of North Potomac, MD; his daughter, Caroline Hampton Ernst (Peter) of Bryn Mawr, PA; brother, Balfour Lipscomb (Mary Elizabeth) of Albany, MS; brother-in-law, Edward Miller (April) of Birmingham, AL; and three granddaughters: Alexandra Lipscomb, Katherine Ernst and Sarah Ernst.
