Ernest Koger

Ernest Koger, 96,of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of the late Annie Laurie Mazzell Koger passed into the presence of Christ, March 3, 2019. His funeral service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2019 in First Baptist Church of Johns Island, 3483 Maybank Hwy.at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends in the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow in the Churchyard. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.

Ernest was born July 7, 1922 in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Robert Lee Koger and Mary Ida Davis Koger. He served in the army and fought in the front lines of five WWII battles from Normandy to Frankfurt until the Allied victory. He is fondly remembered by residents of Johns Island as the proprietor of Koger's Grocery Store on River Road for over twenty years. He was additionally associated for many years with Koger's Hardware. Ernest was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Johns Island where he taught the Junior boys Sunday School class for over 40 years.

Ernest was the husband of the late Annie Laurie Mazzell Koger for more than 70 years. He is survived by his son, Robert Ernest Koger of Johns Island, two daughters, Marilyn K. Sims (Thomas) and Jenny Lynn Koger all of Charleston, SC; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family gives a "thank you" to all who prayed for Ernest during his illness, and a special word of gratitude to the staff of Heartland Hospice who took excellent and compassionate care of him as well as supporting our entire family. We also thank the therapists from Fox rehab who worked with dad. We will miss all the family of friends we have made over the past year.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Johns Island, 3483 Maybank Hwy., Charleston, SC 29455 in honor of the Junior Boys Sunday School class.
