Ernest Obadiah Carter, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of the late Gloria Petursdottir Carter and widower of Emma Janett Hilton Carter, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 20, 2014. The relatives and friends of Mr. Ernest O. Carter are invited to attend his Funeral Service Friday, January 24, 2014, in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Bishop Gadsden Meyer's Hall library. Following the reception, burial will be in Riverview Memorial Park at 1:30 p.m Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Ernie was born December 4, 1927, in Charleston, SC, the son of Oscar Eugene Carter and Rilla Naomi Phillips Carter. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, WWII. He retired as a nuclear engineering technician after 33 years of service at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. Ernie was a longtime member of Ashley River Baptist Church, a Mason and a member of the Charleston Elks Lodge #242.
He is survived by two sons, Richard B. Carter and his wife, Catherine Read, of Washington Crossing, PA and Duane Gehlken of Charleston, SC; his daughter, Carol Carter Green and her husband, Steve, of Charleston, SC; four grandchildren: Ashley Green, Austin Green, Claire Read and Sara Read; five nieces and four nephews. Ernie is predeceased by his brothers, Lloyd Carter, Gene Carter, Vernon Carter and his sister, Grace Carter Meyer.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Bishop Gadsden and Odyssey Hospice for the loving care Ernie received while residing in Meyer's Hall and subsequently in the Read Cloister; and the care shown to his family during this time.
