Emmett Johnson, age 82, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born and raised in Charleston. He graduated from General William Moultrie High School of Mount Pleasant.
Emmett was a Sergeant in the US Marines during the Korean War and stationed in Japan. After returning to the US, he became a shipping agent for Palmetto Shipping Co. and then was a Ship Chandler for 30 years with Coleman Supply Company.
He married his high school sweetheart, Mecca McCants Taylor and they had four daughters. A passionate sailor and life long member of the Charleston Yacht Club and Charleston Cruising Club. Emmett was a yacht racing enthusiast as well as a professional captain who provided private yacht deliveries. He and Mecca lived aboard their 38' yacht and cruised the Caribbean for 22 years.
For years, he served as the Port Captain for theOcean Cruising Club (an international club administered from the U.K. for cruisers) and the Seven Seas Cruising Club.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mecca, of 58 years, his daughters Mecca (Lisa) Page (David), Leigh Ethridge, Lauren Ferri(Pete) and Jennifer Wardlaw(Michael). Grandson, Bryce Ethridge(Carrie) and grand daughters Brie Ferri(Tim), Kim Stark (Brandon), Alexis Wardlaw(Nick), great grand daughter Allison Stark; his sister, Nancy (Suzi) DeMerell, nephew Elliott DeMerell(Anna Leigh), great nephew, Harry, and attack cat "Sam." The family thanks Hospice of Charleston for their excellent care and support.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to 4Ocean.com, a new Florida based business dedicated to the clean up of our oceans.
