Emily Kirkland Grimball, 93, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Saturday, June 3, 2023. Her Graveside Service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 11:00 am at Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave, Charleston, SC 29405. Friends may call Wednesday, June 7, from 4:30 - 6:30 P.M. at 19 Palmetto Road. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Emily was born November 5, 1929 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the only child of the late Dr. Needham Lawton Kirkland and Lillian Sack Kirkland. Emily grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Stephens College and later graduated from College of Charleston with a degree in Biology.
Emily was a member of St. Philips Church where she gave generously of her time and talent to The Flower Guild. She was a member of the Century Club, The Junior League, the Garden Club of Charleston, American Orchid Society, and was a member and past president of the S.C. Orchid Society. She was also a founding member and past president of the Coastal Carolina Orchid Society. Her passion for orchids led to an orchid officially named the Emily Grimball orchid. Emily was a Clemson University Master Gardener and member of the advisory committee on Board of Visitors of Kanuga Conferences.
She was predeceased by Berkeley Grimball, her loving husband of 50 years. She is survived by her sons, Berkeley Grimball Jr., (Ingrid),and Lawton K. Grimball (Betsy); her daughter, Meta Frasch (Charles); her grandchildren Rafe Grimball, Garth Grimball (Pele'), Eliza Smith (Turner), Harriet Haan (Matthew), Anne Lawton Grimball, Wayne Hiott (Ambra), and Emily Hiott; and 4 great grandchildren.
