Emily Heyward Bennett

February 2, 1927 — September 28, 2010

Emily Heyward Bennett entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of September 28, 2010.  The daughter of the late Heyward Adolphus Bennett and Ethel Grooms Bennett, she was born in Summerville, SC, February 2, 1927.  She was predeceased by her sister, Caroline Bennett Gill.


Emily was a graduate of Memminger High School and attended Winthrop College.  She was a member of The Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul and The Daughters of the Confederacy.  Emily enjoyed all of Charleston's cultural activities and was a great patron of the arts.  She will be best remembered for her generosity and her wonderful sense of humor.


She is survived by many loving cousins, including Mateva B. Hard and Celeste H. Ranson of Camden, Mischelle Hard, Laurel Hays, Rosemary Brown, R. Bryan Collins, Timothy H. Collins and Sandra H. Collins of Charleston and Helen H. Simmons of Holly Hill.


Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Monday, October 4, 2010, during the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 pm.  A celebration of Emily's life will take place on Tuesday, October 5th at 10:30 am at The Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. Burial, Bethany Cemetery.


The family would like to express its thanks and appreciation to her wonderful, loving caregivers for many years, Delores President, Bessie Alston and Dana Greene, as well as to Sandpiper Nursing Home and Care for Life, Inc. for their faithful service.
