Elza Meyers Alterman

Elza Meyers Alterman, 95, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of David E. Alterman, entered into eternal rest on Sunday November 11, 2018.
Elza was the daughter of the late Jack and Rosalie Levy Meyers. She was born in Charleston on January 3,1923 and attended the Craft School and Memminger. While studying at the University of South Carolina, she met David Alterman and they married in 1942. While Dave was overseas serving in the US Army, Elza returned to Charleston. After Dave's return they moved briefly to Florida and then returned to Charleston. In 1951 they opened the first Elza's dress store on King St., joining her mother Rosalie Meyers who also had a King St. dress shop.
The store flourished until it's closing in 1997. When the Post and Courier interviewed her and asked what made her store so popular she replied, "To me, the basic ingredient of business is a love and enthusiasm for people which translates, practically, into an understanding of what people need." Elza dressed several generations of Charleston women and her fashion boutique was considered the place where one could find the perfect dress for almost any occasion. Her personal style was also evident, as she was considered one of Charleston's great hostesses whose elegant parties were legendary. Elza was also influential in the revitalization of King Street and served on several local boards including the Gibbes Museum of Art. She was a member of Kahol Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE).
She is survived by her two sons, Jack M. Alterman (Jennet) and Dr. Douglas J. Alterman (Marsha); a daughter, Nancy A. Walker (Brad); three grandchildren, Burden H. Walker (Leslie), Lily D. Alterman, and Rosie H. Alterman; and one great grandchild, Carolina P. Walker.
Graveside services will be private.
