Elona (Lee) Charleen Stevens ,94, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of the late Porter G. Stevens entered into eternal rest Thursday, May 18, 2023. Her funeral service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. 

Elona (Lee) was born on July 26, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, daughter of the late Charles John Haase and the late Wilhelmina Anna Katherina Ahlborn. She grew up in Hammond, Indiana and took art lessons at the Chicago Art Institute and later attended the University of Arizona and began teaching grade school after graduation. She met her first husband at the U of A in Tucson, and they had 3 children. She met her second husband, Porter G. Stevens (deceased 2007) through mutual friends. They were married in 1973 and moved to Antwerp, Belgium spending a year and a half overseas before returning to northern Indiana. They moved to Mount Pleasant in 1976 and Lee was a founding member of the Mount Pleasant Newcomers Club when there was only a population of about 7500. Lee loved opera and the symphony and did volunteer work at the Charleston Museum which fostered her love of anthropology. She was also a beloved mother and “Mimi”. 

She is survived by her children, William Hart of Tucson, AZ, Sandra Marek (James) of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Charles Hart (Karen) of Lexington, SC; her grandchildren, Michael Hart (Sara), Teresa Giles (Joshua), Ken Marek (Rachel), Jeff Marek, Christopher Hart (Nina), Caroline Hart Tran (Kenny); and 5 great grandchildren; stepsons, David Stevens (Cris) of Hinsdale, Illinois, Robert Stevens (Leanne) of Northfield, Michigan, Scott Stevens (Ruby) of Wayne, New York; 9 grandchildren and 6 great -grandchildren. 

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Charleston Museum.
