Ellen Astrom Thompson Reid

Ellen Astrom Thompson Reid, 82, of Charleston, SC passed away peacefully in her home on May 4, 2022. She was the daughter of George Edward and Ingeborg Elisabeth Astrom Thompson. She was a native of Athens, Georgia, and a graduate of Athens High School. She graduated from the University of Georgia (Pi Beta Phi Sorority and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society) and was always an enthusiastic Bulldog fan. After college, she spent several years as a supportive military wife and busy mother of three children. After ten years of various military assignments, she and her family settled in Charleston, SC.

With her outgoing personality, Ellen enjoyed a long and successful career in real estate. "Sellin Ellen" was a loyal member of many organizations, clubs, and societies, including the Charleston Sertoma, Kiwanis, Elks Lodge, Charleston County Master Gardeners, Stevens Ministry, Charleston Rotary, Charleston Shag Club, Seacoast Church and the South Carolina and National Associations of Realtors.  She proudly supported the local Arts community, including the CSO, the local theater companies and the annual Spoleto Festival.  It is difficult to identify a cause in which she was not involved. She was particularly passionate toward Toastmasters International (44 years), serving as District 58 Governor for South Carolina in 1988-89.

She is survived by her children - Janet, Robert and Karen, her sister, Janet Griffith (Athens, GA), four grandchildren - Michelle, George, Hanna and Emma, and a niece, Michelle.  Ellen never met a stranger. She loved helping people and was surrounded by an amazing village of family, friends, neighbors and colleagues.

A celebration of her life will be held at a future date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapels.

In lieu of flowers, Ellen requests that you join Toastmasters or honor her memory with a donation to the Charleston Horticultural Society (www.chashortsoc.org), the local Elks Lodge (#242) or your favorite charity.
