Elizabeth, known affectionately as Betty, by her friends and family, was born June 26, 1937, on Indian Island, Maine, in the home of her parents, Horace Augustine Nicolar and Harriet Shay Nicolar. Betty was a proud member of the Penobscot Nation, as were both of her parents. She and her family experienced all of the ravages of being Native American in this country, but she persevered and lived her life in gratitude. She was a housewife and stay at home Mother, married to the love of her life for 60 years before he passed. Betty loved life. She was lifted up by her strong faith and her Higher Power. She was a devoted member and mentor in AA for more than 34 years. She was an avid Bingo player and avid bowler. She loved movies and the theatre, and crocheted every doily, table cloth and throw imaginable. Her home was her Castle, always tidy and clean, and always open to anyone in need of shelter. Her greatest joy was her family, who meant everything to her. Her family will always be blessed by her life and their memories of her.
She is survived by her two daughters, Debra E. Stokes and Ruth A. Stokes of Charleston, SC; brother, Leroy Nicolar of Indian Island, ME; two sisters, Emma Decora and Geraldine Haddad both of Indian Island, ME; very special sister-in-law, "Sister Al" Annie Lee Grimes; her two rambunctious Dachshunds, Patches and Duzzy; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and her daughter, Rhonda Lynn Stokes.
