Elizabeth "Elise" Martin Scarborough, 91, widow of Senator Robert Bowman Scarborough, of Charleston, SC, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017. Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 20, 2017, in Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow in Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in J.Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC.
Elise was born April 25, 1926 to the late Milo Berry Martin, Jr. and Bertha Mae Martin of Winnsboro, SC She graduated from Winthrop College. Upon graduation, she moved to Charleston, SC where she taught Home Economics at Memminger High School and High School of Charleston while volunteering at the YWCA.
Elise belonged to the Garden Club of Charleston, Charleston Exchange Club Auxiliary, and was a founding member of the South Windemere Garden Club and the Fort Johnson Garden Club. She was a member of Grace Church Cathedral. She was a homemaker and avid gardener.
Elise is survived by her two sons, Robert Bowman Scarborough, Jr. and his wife Mary, of Charleston, SC and Wallace Berry Scarborough and his wife Catherine, of Beaufort, SC; and three grandchildren, Samuel Middleton Scarborough, Ross Erwin Scarborough, and Elizabeth Maybank Scarborough, and her brother, Milo Berry Martin, III, of Winnsboro, SC;
