Bette was born on June 29, 1931, in Johnsonville, SC to the late Willard E. Cox and Eloise A. Cox.

Living for a time in Manteo, NC, she also co-managed the Hotel Norlina in Norlina, NC during the mid-1950's, where she met Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was traveling through the area. Later she was a teller at the Bank of Manteo. In 1968, Bette moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC to manage the Lorelei Restaurant on Shem Creek.

Working with the landscaping of the properties, Bette became interested in and became a Master Gardener with a degree from Clemson University. She was also a member of the Hobcaw Garden Club, the Garden Club of Charleston, and was president of the South Windermere Garden club from 2003-2005.

Bette is survived by her sons: Thomas M. Fearing, (Mary Ellen) of Manteo, NC and Cary B.
