Entered into eternal rest on May 12, 2012, Elizabeth "Betsy" Mize Petit, widow of Charles Francis Petit, Jr. Residence, Oviedo, FL, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel one hour prior to the service.
Betsy was born May 8, 1916 in Elberton, Georgia, a daughter of the late Carl H. and Willie Smith Mize. She graduated from high school in Charleston and then attended Palmer Business School in Charleston. Betsy married her high school sweetheart, Charlie F. Petit, Jr. on December 20, 1934. They lived in Charleston, then later in Mt. Pleasant, where they devoted their time and energy to many local civic and community organizations, as well as their family.
She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. Betsy was a very active member of St. James United Methodist Church in Charleston, then of Hibben United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. She was a Past President of the Auxiliary Exchange Club of Charleston. Betsy was the Administrative Secretary to three colonels in the Commandant's Office at The Citadel. From 1950 until she retired, she received many honors from the Corps of Cadets. Among those honors was that of being the first woman to ever have a military college dedicate their annual yearbook to her.
Betsy was preceded in death by her husband in 1994 and her only brother, Carl Mize in 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Jolyn Petit of Oviedo, FL; two nieces, Sandy Evans of Charleston and Christine Staubes of Mt. Pleasant; great-niece, Michelle Evans Luther of Rhode Island; and great-nephew, John Cecil Evans, III of Charleston.
