Elizabeth Gail Hughes Gilkeson, 57, of Charleston, South Carolina, formerly of Roanoke, Virginia, and wife of David O. Gilkeson, entered into eternal rest Thursday, September 4, 2014. Her Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2014, in St. Michael's Church, 71 Broad Street, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the churchyard. Arrangements by J. Elizabeth was born January 6, 1957 in Point-a-Pierre, Trinidad, daughter of the late Frank Geoffrey Hughes and Valerie Neal Hughes. In 1974, she graduated from Oakdene School for Girls and completed her one year foundation course at Bath Academy of Art, Wiltshire. She graduated with a fine arts degree from West Surrey College of Art and Design in the United Kingdom. Elizabeth took textiles as part of her curriculum and has always had a passion for color and fabrics. She worked in a graphic design and print company in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was a professional artist who painted in oils, acrylics and designed needlepoint. Elizabeth's paintings were also sold at White House Galleries in Roanoke, Virginia. She had several extremely successful shows in Roanoke and Charlottesville, Virginia selling her needlepoint designs. Elizabeth and her husband own The French Thistle Fabric and Upholstery Store in Charleston, SC. Together they attended St. Michael's Church.
A woman of incredible faith in her creator, the Lord Jesus Christ, Elizabeth is survived by her husband, David, of Charleston, SC; daughter, Cara Hughes-McBroom of Charleston, SC; son, Daniel McBroom of Roanoke, VA; five step-children: Thalassa Kent McBroom of Roanoke, VA, Frieda Jay Smith of Edinburgh, Scotland, Matti Smith McBroom of Tulsa, OK, David Kirk Gilkeson of Roanoke, VA and Nathan Gregory Gilkeson of Charleston, SC; sister, Sarah Anne Valerie Wigzell and brother-in-law, Richard Guy Wigzell of Woodbridge, United Kingdom; sister-in-law, Jacqueline Hughes of London, United Kingdom; niece, Alexandra Jacqueline Nikita Hughes; nephews, Eden Paul Atwood Wigzell and Chester Sydney Wigzell; and two grandchildren: Walker Hughes McBroom and Alea Kent Trexell. She is predeceased by a brother, Geoffrey Paul Hughes.
