Elizabeth Bailey King Garvin, 85, of Yonges Island, South Carolina, wife of Dr. Joshua LaRoche Garvin, Jr., entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 14, 2023. Her service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2023 in Christ St. Paul’s Church, 4981 Chapel Road, Yonges Island, South Carolina, 29449 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends after the service. Arrangements are by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel.
Elizabeth, or Betty as she was known, was born on May 2, 1938 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of Richard Gadsden King and Elizabeth LaRoche King. With the exception of time away for college, she spent her whole life in Yonges Island, South Carolina.
She was a life long member of Christ St. Paul’s Church where she was very active. In addition to teaching Sunday School, she served on the Altar Guild and was on the Vestry numerous times. She was elected the first female Senior Warden.
She graduated as the Salutatorian from St. Paul’s High School and was very active in all school activities. She was an outstanding basketball player. She received the medal for being the Best All-Around Girl for 1956 from St. Paul’s High School.
She graduated from Winthrop College in January, 1960. She had the highest grades in her major and received the Borden Award, which included a full year’s tuition. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Cum Laude and was selected to be listed in the Who’s Who among students in American universities and colleges for the 1959-1960 edition.
She married Dr. Joshua LaRoche Garvin, Jr. on January 27, 1960 and the marriage lasted sixty-three- and one-half years. She spent her life helping her husband in his dental practice and entrepreneurial projects that they took on together. She was an experienced water skier, snow skier, a certified scuba diver and sailor.
She is survived by her two sons, Joshua L. Garvin III (Joy) of Yonges Island, Richard Garvin (Katherine) of Yonges Island; five grandchildren, Anna, Mariah, Richard King, Victoria and Olivia; one great grandchild, Fin.
