Betty Ackerman was born on April 26, 1920 in Syracuse, New York, daughter of the late Dr. Dewitt Clinton Brougham and Mildred Irene Mould Brougham. Having been a devoted Navy wife, she enthusiastically immersed herself in civic organizations wherever she lived. She worked tirelessly as a volunteer, wherever her husband, Ack, was stationed. Betty was an active volunteer throughout her life in a wide range of organizations, both in Washington, DC and the Charleston area. When she moved to the Mt. Pleasant area in the mid-1970's, she brought her volunteer spirit and knowledge from Washington, DC and helped start the Charleston Symphony Designer Showhouse. During her lifetime, Betty remained an active member of the Charleston Symphony, Snee Farm Garden Club, and loved playing bridge. One of the hallmarks of Betty Ackerman was her ability to bring humor to any situation.
She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Ackerman Bannon of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and her husband, Bill Marshall; grandsons, William Carol Bannon and his wife, Julia, of Portland, OR, Timothy John Bannon of Chicago, IL and CMDR.
