Eleanor Simpson Smith

Eleanor Simpson Smith, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, died Sunday, March 4, 2018. Her memorial service will be held Friday, April 6, 2018, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:30 pm. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in the Mount Pleasant Chapel one hour prior to the service.

Eleanor was born December 8, 1920 in Charleston, South Carolina, one of six children of the late James Harvey Smith and the late Marion Lykes Smith. She retired from the Charleston County School system as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Charleston Lion's Club Auxiliary, and Women's Club of Charleston. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Charleston County Museum.

She is survived by three daughters, Nancy S. Lewis of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Eleanor S. Hucks (Ted) of North Charleston, SC, and Lise S. Tharp of Germanton, NC; four sons, Richard H. Simpson (Connie) of Mount Pleasant, SC, James H. Simpson Ph.D (Debbie), of Hillsborough, NJ, Dr. Wilbur C. Simpson, Jr. (Jackie) of Jacksonville, FL, and Dr. Philip A. McGowan (Nancy) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; thirteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Philip A. McGowan, Wilbur C. Simpson and Lt. Louis H. Smith, Jr. and her siblings.
