Elder James Galtin Slan, Sr. 82, of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, husband of Alice Singleton Slan entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 14, 2017. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 19, 2017 at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 7396 Rivers Ave., North Charleston at 12:00p.m.(Noon). Entombment will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday at J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00p.m.
James was born May 13, 1935 in Woodville, Mississippi, son of the late Chalmers Slan and Mary Ashford Slan. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as Staff Sergeant. He also retired from Hallmark Cards. James was a graduate of Penn Valley Community College where he received his Associates Degree in Business. James was the past District 1 Commander of the VFW, past State Chaplain for VFW, past Master of Prince Hall, Eureka Lodge 170, Kansas City, MO, past Commissioner of BSA, Kansas City, member of the Order of the Arrow, BSA, past Commander of VFW Post#10811, Charleston County Veterans Association, Wadmalaw Island Land Use Committee, Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop #1142, Production Superintendent of Charleston Tea Plantation and active member of the American Legion Post #112. He also served as Pastor of the Community of Christ Church, North Charleston, SC for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Alice S. Slan of Wadmalaw Island, SC; two daughters, Lenora Williams of Colorado Springs, CO; Leslie Carper of Lawrence, KS; three sons, Stephen H. Slan (Melanie) of Wadmalaw Island, SC, Lorne Slan and Sean Slan both of Lawrence, KS; sister, Audrey Sterling of New Orleans, LA; brother-in-law, Stanley Singleton (Leslie) of St. Albans, NY; sister-in-law, Henrietta King of St. Albans, NY; twelve grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, Michael Mahone and James Slan, Jr.
