Edwin R. Mohrmann, 94, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Phyllis Newsom Metts Mohrmann, entered into eternal rest Saturday, February 11, 2017. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, February 16, 2017, in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the Church Parish Auditorium. Edwin was born December 13, 1922 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late H.F.W. Mohrmann, Sr. and Helen Martschink Mohrmann. He was a retired sales manager with Allstate Insurance. He was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, where he served in numerous leadership positions at the congregational and synod level. He and his first wife Kathryn, were the first volunteer directors of the Lutheran Coastal Retreat Center on the Isle of Palms.
In addition, he served in leadership positions in the Jaycees, March of Dimes (co-founder of the local telethon), National Association for Mental Health (for which he served as vice president) at the local, state, and national levels. He served on the board of the Charleston Orphan Home, on the College of Charleston Alumni Association Board, and after his retirement chaired the Governor's State Health Coordinating Commission.
In addition to his wife, Phyllis, he is survived by three daughters: Lynne M. Bernthal (David) of Charleston, SC, Dr. Margaret E. Mohrmann (Deborah Healey) of Charlottesville, VA and Donna M. Hanna of Charlotte, NC; son, Rev. E. Ray Mohrmann, Jr. (Ann) of Lexington, SC; step-son, Leonard Keith Metts (Debbie) of North Charleston, SC; step-daughter, Kimberley McCants (Tom) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson.
Edwin was predeceased by his first wife, Kathryn Wohlers Mohrmann; brother, Dr. H.F.W. Mohrmann, Jr.; sister, Marian Mohrmann Kearse; and grandson, Thomas J. King, III.
