Edwin John Boothroyd of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away peacefully after a period of declining health on August 8, 2024.

Edwin was born May 14, 1935 in Fall River, MA to Emily McCrosson and Edwin Boothroyd. His family lived in North Dighton, MA before moving to Durham, NC, where he graduated from high school. He was one of two children.

Ed earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in Durham, NC. He met his wife Sallie (Baatz) in the summer of 1958 at Penn State University, and it was love at first sight. After serving in the United States Air Force in Okinawa, Japan, Ed returned to marry Sallie in 1961 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sharon, PA. They had four children, whom they lovingly raised in Asheville, NC. Their home was a welcoming place for many neighborhood children and friends. Sallie and Ed were married for 60 years.

During his career as an electrical engineer, Ed worked for Kearfott, Square D, and Westinghouse/Eaton. Ed taught several math courses at AB-Technical College in Asheville, NC and helped many adult learners attain their GED.

Ed was a kind, gentle, caring, humble, patient, and encouraging son, husband, father, brother, neighbor, and friend. He shared his heart-warming smile, positive attitude, and love of life with family and friends. He was a person who constantly practiced his faith through small acts of kindness, like shoveling snow for a sick neighbor or planting 40 flower bulbs for a neighbor’s upcoming 40th birthday. Ed was a dedicated blood donor with the American Red Cross, a church lector, RCIA sponsor, and helped many children in the neighborhood as a math tutor.

As a Duke graduate, Ed was a loyal Blue Devils fan. He loved sports and, by example, encouraged his children to play basketball, tennis, baseball, softball, go fishing, and appreciate the great outdoors with picnics, hiking, and camping in the mountains of N.C.

In 2014 Ed and Sallie moved to Mt. Pleasant, S.C. where they continued to make friends wherever they went. They were active residents of The Palms of Mt Pleasant, and Somerby where Ed served on several residents’ councils. He enjoyed RiverDogs baseball games and being a member of the “Rusty Hooks” fishing group. Ed took excellent and patient care of Sallie for many years as her health declined. Ed loved being near his family and taking in the beauty of the Charleston area.

Ed is survived by two daughters, Barbara McClendon (Brent) of Charleston, SC, Margaret Emily Boothroyd (Wolfgang Grimm) of Aalen, Germany, two granddaughters, Erin Boothroyd McClendon of Charleston, SC and Sarah Grimm of Aalen, Germany, and special sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He leaves behind dear friends in Asheville, NC, Wauwatosa, WI, and Mt. Pleasant, SC. Mr. Boothroyd was blessed to be cared for by his longtime friends and companions Earnestine Manigault and Mary Horry. Ed is predeceased by his wife Sallie, his two sons, Christopher and Michael, and sister Gail Buttry.

The family would like to thank the dedicated and professional staff of The Oaks at Mt Pleasant, Christ Our King Senior Ministry, and Agape Hospice for caring for Mr. Boothroyd over the last year. Please consider donating blood to the American Red Cross in his memory. Services will be held at a later date. The family is being served by J. Henry Stuhr, Mt. Pleasant, SC.
