Edward Armstrong Place, USAF Ret., 86, of North Charleston, SC, husband of Corazon Pangan Place died Sunday, March 8, 2015. His funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 11, 2015 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road at 10:00 am. Interment with military honors will follow in Whispering Pines Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 10, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel.
Ed was born January 5, 1929 in Paterson, New Jersey, son of the late Edward A. Place Sr. and Lucy Mae Mincey Place. A graduate of Hixson High School, Hixson, TN he was an All-American basketball player for the Wildcats. He earned his bachelor's degree from McKenzie College, Chattanooga, TN. During his 26 year military career, which included the Vietnam War, he earned the Bronze Star and numerous citations. Ed was a longtime member of VFW Post 3142 and served as Sr. Vice Commander, Chaplain, Canteen Manager and Post Committee Chairman; he was voted Commander of the Year several times. Ed was a member of Solomon Masonic Lodge #1 and was a member of Omar Shriners.
He is survived by his wife, son, Ronald Edward Place (Brenda) of Dunlap, TN; three grandchildren, Mandy Johnson (Eric) of Soddy Daisy, TN, Becky Place-Barker (Flavius) of Dunlap, TN, Ronnie Place, of Savannah, GA; three great-grandchildren, Julia, Hannah and Ansley Johnson, all of Soddy Daisy, TN; brother, Johnny Pack of Chattanooga, TN.
