Entered into eternal rest on February 21, 2013 Edmund L. Hester of Hanahan, SC husband of Edith L. Pace Hester. Friends and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Hester are invited to attend his funeral services at Highland Park Baptist Church on February 24, 2013 at three o'clock. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park, Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 pm until the time of the services. Arrangements by J. He was born in North Charleston, SC, the son of the late Melvin L. Hester and the late Maggie Willis Hester on July 9, 1930. He was a veteran of the United States Army.Mr. Hester retired from the Naval Weapons Station Charleston as Facilities Manager of the Weapons Station South Annex in North Charleston. He also served as the Inter Service Support Agreement Coordinator for the Weapons Station and was awarded numerous commendations for his administrative and logistic accomplishments in support of other branches of the military services. He was formerly Manager of Industrial Relations at Raybestos Manhattan, Inc., North Charleston, SC. He graduated from North Charleston High School where he was a three-sport athlete. Then he attended Newberry College and upon graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce he was the recipient of the W. L. Laval Award in recognition of his scholastic leadership and athletic accomplishments. As a strong advocate of team competition and fair-play, he was a popular official of High School and Collegiate sports and in the American Legion Baseball program for many years. Mr. Hester was elected to the Hanahan Public Service Commission serving as Chairman and subsequently elected as a charter member to the initial Hanahan City Council serving as Mayor Pro Tempore and as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church, served as a Deacon and a Trustee. He was a member of the Fishermen Sunday School Class.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years; a son Stephen E. Hester (Shannon) of Goose Creek, SC; a daughter Karen L. Fulghum (Kenneth) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a granddaughter Jean Louise Fulghum and a grandson Brandon Scott Hester; a brother Dr. Harvey A. Hester of Melbourne, FL and a sister Barbara A. Wilson of North Charleston, SC.
