August 15, 1928 — July 31, 2013

Edith LaBruce Mitchell, 84, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, devoted mother, grandmother, and widow of John Magill Mitchell, Jr., died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Medical University of South Carolina. The relatives and friends of Edith Mitchell are invited to attend her Memorial Service on Friday, August 2, 2013 in St Andrew's Church, 440 Whilden Street, Mount Pleasant at 11:00 am. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 1, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.

Edith was born on August 15, 1928 in Raleigh, North Carolina, daughter of the late Julian Huger LaBruce and the late Bessie Frampton LaBruce. She graduated from Reidsville (N.C.) High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She married John Magill Mitchell, Jr. in 1948. She and Jack were married for 58 years, until his death in 2007. Edith devoted her life to God and her family. She was a lifelong, active member of St. Andrew's Church in Mount Pleasant and served for many years on the Church Altar Guild. She knew the Episcopal Prayer Book practically by heart. She was a world-class cook, specializing in all the game and seafood that Jack brought home. As a member of the Junior League of Charleston, she was instrumental in the development of "Charleston Receipts" and made several appearances on television in the 1960s to prepare recipes from the book. She enjoyed sewing and made everything from beautiful quilts to evening dresses to Christmas ornaments for her family. She also had a soft spot for animals, especially Kitty and Dobie. Edith had a gentle, giving, sweet spirit that shined through everything she did, especially the love with which she raised her daughters. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye and a source of tremendous joy and pride for their "Mimi". To all who knew her, Edith was a quiet but powerful example of love and service to God and to others.

She is survived by her two daughters, Edith M. Blair and her husband, Andrew K. Blair, and Ann M. Thrash and her husband, Bill Thrash, all of Mount Pleasant, SC; and two grandchildren, Andrew K. Blair, Jr. and Mary Magill Blair, both of Mount Pleasant, SC. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack, and a daughter, Elizabeth LaBruce Mitchell.

Her family would like to thank the staff of Franke at Seaside for the care and kindness they extended to Edith.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406.
