Edith Ruth Mayo Hancock, 89, wife of the late George Hancock, of Waynesville, NC, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Friday, May 11, 2012. The relatives and friends of Edith Hancock are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Saturday, May 19, 2012 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 2:00 pm. Entombment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 18, 2012 in the Mount Pleasant Chapel from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
Edith was born on June 20, 1922 in Everett, Massachusetts, daughter of the late George S. Mayo and Cornelia V. McCarthy Mayo. After graduation from high school, she joined the United States Navy and served during World War ll achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. While serving in the Navy she met and married the late Sgt. Maj. George H. Hancock and they were married 51 years. She graduated from the Bish Mathis Business School in 1952 and had a long career in bookkeeping and accounting. She retired from Civil Service at the Charleston Naval Base Supply Center. She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, East Cooper Homemakers Club, Senior Citizens of Mount Pleasant and Past President of Fort Sumter Business and Professional Women.
She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy H. Hutchinson of Raleigh, NC and her husband Sigmon Hutchinson and Sally H. Heath of Waynesville, NC and her husband Clayton Heath; one brother, Robert Mayo of Athol, MA; three grandchildren, Faith Atkinson of Okinawa, Japan and her husband MGySgt. Willis Atkinson, Hank L Hutchinson MD of Tallahassee, FL and his wife Kelly Hutchinson, Lynn Heath of Sylva, NC, and her husband Kevin Stanberry; six great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Samantha Atkinson, George, Isabel and Sean Hutchinson, and Abigail Stanberry.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Endowment Fund, Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
