Edith Etheredge Calliham, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of George N. Calliham, Jr., entered into eternal rest Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Her funeral service will be held Friday, June 13, 2014, in Bethel United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Edith was born January 4, 1928, in Berkeley County, SC, the daughter of John Beckwith Etheredge and Exie E. Singletary Etheredge. She attended Berkeley County schools and retired as Vice President from First National Bank of South Carolina in 1985 after 40 years of service.
Mrs. Calliham was active in leadership at John Wesley United Methodist Church, serving five terms as chair and was the first woman elected to the administrative board. She served on the South Carolina United Methodist Conference on the Board of Finance and Administration, the Board of Pension and Insurance, and the Bishop's Committee on Direct Billing.
She served the Charleston District South Carolina United Methodist conference as chair of the Board of Locations and Building for many years, where her leadership guided many churches through successful planning for expansion and development. Mrs. Calliham also served Bethel as member chancel choir, chairman of Methodist Women's Circle, and Pianist for Sunday School Classes.
As a member of the United States Navy League, she was Past President of the Local and State Chapter, Past Regional President, served five years as National Vice President, and served two years as National Treasurer.
She was former state President of the Charleston Chapter of United States Air Force Association.
Mrs. Calliham served the National Association of Bank Women as State, Regional, and National President. She traveled throughout the United States speaking to various groups of bankers.
She served the Charleston community in leadership positions on the United Way Board and the Charleston Chamber of Commerce, being the first woman elected to the Board of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce. She also served Mended Hearts, Inc. local chapter in many leadership positions.
She is survived by her son, G. Nollon Calliham, III of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren: Robert L. Calliham, Jr. and Michele C. Smith; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, among them John B. Whittle and Sherry W. Christian (Wayne). She was preceded in death by her son, Robert L. Calliham; her brothers: John B. Etheredge and Harry F. Etheredge; and her sister, Margaret E. Whittle.
