Edgar Allen Bergholtz, 89, of Cottageville, South Carolina, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 3, 2014, in Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1149 Russell Drive. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, on Thursday, October 2, 2014, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm with the Holy Rosary recited at 6:00 pm.
Edgar was born May 15, 1925 in Hillsdale, New Jersey, son of the late Edgar Allen Bergholtz and Margaret Burchill Bergholtz. He served during World War II, having joined the Navy in 1942 after Pearl Harbor and was honorably discharged in 1945 as a Boatswain's Mate First Class. Edgar was a graduate of Tusculum College in Tennessee, where he received a degree in Political Science. He went on to work with, and retire from, the F.B.I. as a Special Agent. While with the Bureau, he received several meritorious recognitions from Director J. Edgar Hoover, and mainly worked in the area of organized crime. Edgar was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the F.B.I. as well as the Irish Society.
He is survived by his children, Lisa Bergholtz of Cottageville, SC, Brian Bergholtz and his wife, Linda, of Oregon, and Jo Elizabeth Bergholtz of Ladson; and his grandchildren, Stephen Bergholtz and Stephenie Seppen, both of Rochester, NY. He was preceded in death by his sons, Stephen Anthony Bergholtz and Edgar "Mick" Bergholtz.
