Earle F. "Mac" McSpadden, husband of Margaret S. McSpadden, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2011 at Bishop Gadsden in Charleston, South Carolina.
Mac was born on August 2, 1922 in Teague, Texas. He attended Teague High School, Tarleton College, and Texas A & M University where he earned a degree in civil engineering. He was commissioned into the US army where he served his country during World War II. Mac began a forty year career with the DuPont Company, devoted to the construction of chemical plants. A registered professional engineer, Mac managed the construction of facilities across the United States and Europe, including the Cooper River Plant in Goose Creek. He retired in 1986 and resided in Charleston until his death.
An avid golfer, Mac was a member of the Country Club of Charleston for many years. He also enjoyed hunting, travel, photography and gardening. He was also an active member of the Charleston Lions Club. Mac will be remembered by family and friends for his kindness, generosity, honesty and humor. We will all miss his smile and the mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ethel Beane McSpadden and Earle F. McSpadden, Sr. In addition to his wife of 35 years, Margaret, he is survived by his sister Dorothy M. Savage of Houston, TX; son David E. McSpadden of Houston, TX; daughter Martha M. Britt and husband, William of Winston-Salem, NC.; step-children Gena E. Schultz and husband, Robert of Chocowinity, NC., Rodney H. Eldredge of Charleston, John Paul Eldredge and wife, Anne of Peachtree City, GA.; grandchildren, Kate and Ian McSpadden, Michael and Trey Britt, Tia Phillips, Todd Schultz, Cassie and Maggie Eldredge; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, June 26 at 2:00 in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden. Entombment will follow in the Bishop Gadsden Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Residents' Assistance Fund, One Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412.
