Dr. William Ransom Haynie II, 90, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. He was the son of the late Dr. J. William and Annie Pierce Blake Haynie of Belton, SC. Private services will be held by the family at a later date.
Dr. Haynie is survived by his wife, Anne Sullivan Haynie of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Sumter, SC; two children, Mayor Will Haynie and his wife Suzette of Mount Pleasant, SC and Nancy Haynie Cheatham and her husband Deck of Monteagle, TN; five grandchildren and their families, Sarah Cheatham Oberle and Kyle, their children, August Ann and Ellis of St. Louis, MO, Blake Cheatham and Joy of Columbus, OH, Elizabeth Cheatham McBay and Kyle of Chattanooga, TN, William Ransom Haynie III of Jay, VT, and Laura Haynie Huffman and Robert and their son, Archer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lewis Haynie.
Educated in the primary grades in Honea Path and Belton, Dr. Haynie graduated from Belton High School in 1953. He was an alumnus of the Citadel, class of 1957, and of the Medical College of South Carolina (now MUSC), class of 1960. After completing his internship at Greenville General Hospital, he served for two years, active duty, as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. He then returned to Belton and practiced general medicine for three years, following he returned to MUSC for a three year residency in diagnostic radiology. Upon completion, he came to Sumter in 1969 and practiced until he retired.
Dr. Haynie belonged to several professional organizations and was a past president of The Sumter/Clarendon/Lee Medical Society and of the S.C. Radiological Association.
