Richard Dunn Marks, Jr. MD died peacefully on November 16, 2017. He was born September 30, 1932 at his grandparents' home in Cumberland, Virginia; he later attended Appomattox High School, before heading to the University of Virginia. As an undergraduate student at the University, he played freshman football, was involved in R.O.T.C., Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the Raven Society. He also attended University of Virginia Medical School and served in the US Army. In 1962, Dr. Marks began a family medical practice in Scottsville, Virginia. He later returned to the University of Virginia to complete a residency in Radiation Oncology. In 1972, he moved with his family to Charleston to join the Medical University of South Carolina where he later served as Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology and subsequently at Trident Hospital. Dr. Marks had a great deal of love for his patients, residents and colleagues. He was a leader in the American Cancer Society, started a community Peripheral Neuropathy support group, and was instrumental in bringing Hospice care to Charleston. He had many passions, the greatest being his faith, family, and friends. A man of many interests, Dr. Marks enjoyed running, hiking, hunting, painting, home renovation, music, writing, history, and all UVA sports. He cherished his two churches, St. Andrews Mt. Pleasant and Union Congregational Church on Isle Au Haut, Maine.
Dr. Marks is survived by his wife, Patricia Boggs Marks; a brother-in-law, L. Thomas Boggs (Kay); his children, Melissa Marks Williams (Bruce), Richard Dunn Marks, III (Margi) and Anne Marks Jones (Sam); 6 grandchildren, Jonathan, Richard, Morgan, Louise, Sam, and Virginia and one great-grand daughter, Ellie.
The family will receive friends on November 20, at 120 Hibben St., Mt. Pleasant from 5:00-7:00 pm. A funeral service for family and friends will be held on November 21, at 11:00 am at St. Andrews Mt. Pleasant, 440 Whilden Street, with a reception to follow in Sam's Hall.
