Laurence Hunter Raney, M.D., a retired associate professor at MUSC, of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, beloved husband for 36-years to Geraldine Sorrentino Raney, passed into peaceful rest Friday, May 17, 2019.
Dr. Raney's life journey began on May 15, 1958 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the son of the late Dr. Leslie Jacob Raney and the late Harriet Sue Hunter Raney. He spent his formative years in Bozeman Montana, Miami and Boca Raton, Florida. He received his undergraduate degrees from Tulane University, LA and medical school at University of Florida.
Dr. Raney graduated from the University of Florida School of Medicine. He completed his internship at the Medical University of South Carolina and then his Emergency Medicine residency at Richland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Raney practiced Emergency Medicine for 24 years, first at Roper Hospital, then left in 1994 with 3 other partners to open a new Emergency medicine department at MUSC, as it was only a trauma center at that time. He was medical director of the MUSC ER department for 11 years. Dr. Raney took extreme pride and joy in establishing the first Emergency Medicine Residency program at the Medical University in S.C. in 2008. He loved sharing his knowledge with his students and nurturing them into outstanding physicians. He always considered them his children.
Larry was also a "jack of all trades" and a mentor for master gardener students. He was a woodworker, a photographer, a snow skier, a scuba diver, a computer genius, an accomplished cook and beer maker. He loved shooting billiards with his wife Gerry. He loved nature, history, reading, writing and listening to all kinds of music. He never stopped learning new skills. He was not only a teacher in the medical community but loved to share his knowledge and passions with others and if it was broken, Larry could fix it! Plus, he had a tool for everything!
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Gerry Raney. They would be married 36 years come June 19th. They had a wonderful adventurous life together. They traveled the world where Dr. Raney was an international guest speaker at many medical symposiums. He loved to set sail with Gerry on their boat the " R & R". Larry always told me, as we would sit on our front porch during happy hour, "how blessed he was for this spectacular life that we shared and experienced together as husband and wife".
He was so very grateful and appreciative for every minute of it and would not change a thing including our most recent addition to the family, our dog "Cuda," inherited from my mother.
Larry loved life and all those that crossed his path. He was a kind, loving, funny, gentle, compassionate, intelligent and witty man! I have always been so very proud to call him my husband and life partner. He dedicated his life to medicine, family and friends. He was a great patriot and loved his country. He gave back by being an outstanding caring physician and loving person. He provided medical direction for many in the medical community: ground EMS team, North Charleston Volunteer Rescue Squad and Isle of Palms Fire Department. Before retirement, Larry was the medical director for Meducare Air and Omniflight Air. After he retired in 2011 from MUSC he continued to give back by providing medical direction for Life-Net, the local helicopter Air EMS. Larry was a member of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, American College of Emergency Physicians and the Charleston County Medical Society.
He is survived by his wife, Gerry Raney of Isle of Palms, SC; sister Ellen Marie Raney, M.D. (Jean) of Portland Oregon and many extended family members, friends and Cuda their little dog.
Services will be private for family members. A celebration of Larry's life will be held in the future.
