Dr. James "Jim" Coleman Engle, 87, of Mount Pleasant, husband of Mary Ellen Mahan Engle, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Saturday in the Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Jim was born June 6, 1930, in Charlotte, N.C., son of the late Russell Engle and the late Virginia Beasley Engle. He was a graduate of Emory University and Emory Medical School. He served as a captain and general surgeon in the U.S. Army. He trained in cardiovascular thoracic surgery at the University of Minnesota and practiced in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He retired in 1993, and moved to Mount Pleasant in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Engle of Mt. Pleasant; three sons, James Coleman Engle. Jr. (Susan) of Savannah, Ga., Sean Engle (Meeta) of Seattle, Wash., and Max Engle of Charleston; one daughter, Stephanie Engle of Talladega, Ala.; one brother, Donald Engle of Warner Robins, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Melina Roy, Nick Sinesi, Christine Harles, Paige Harles and Olivia Harles. He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry of Charlotte, N.C.
