Dr. Fulton Jacob Gasper, 62, died January 21, 2018 in Charleston, SC, after a short but hard-fought battle with leukemia. Visitation will be at Dukes Harley Funeral Home in Orangeburg, SC on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Mass will be held at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, SC at 1:00 pm on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens in Mt. He was born January 1, 1956 in Florence, SC, to the late Theodore Howard Gasper and Margaret Mayer Gasper.
Dr. Gasper was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and a 1984 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his internship at Spartanburg General Hospital and residency in ophthalmology at the Storm Eye Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina. He practiced ophthalmology for almost thirty years in Orangeburg, SC, where he was a partner at Orangeburg Eye Center. He also traveled to Haiti for several eye mission trips and volunteered at the Carolina Coliseum Thanksgiving luncheon for numerous years providing eye care for the homeless.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years Anne Bradford Gasper of Orangeburg and two daughters: Dr. Catherine Gasper of Birmingham, Alabama, and Mrs. Margaret Gasper Pope (Elliott) of Lexington, NC; mother-in-law: Mrs. Robert Bradford of Orangeburg, SC; brothers: Dr. Theodore Gasper, Jr., of Wilmington, NC; Steven Gasper of Ten Mile, TN; Leo Gasper (Amy) of Portland, OR; Kenneth Gasper (Patty) of Charlotte, NC; and Christopher Gasper of Lake City, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
