Nell was born August 19, 1927 in White Mound , Texas, daughter of the late Ray Augustus Martin and the late Jennie Katherine Bruce. Known widely as "The Queen," Nell enjoyed rising above challenges from an early age.
Professionally, Nell got her start as a telephone operator and administrative assistant and a stay-at-home-mom wherever her husband Joe's career with the Veterans Administration took them from 1947 until they made their final stop in 1965 in Charleston, SC. Nell began her work in maritime affairs in 1965 with the Naval Shipyard Dispensary and the US Coast Guard until she retired in 1983 and that's when Nell became a small business entrepreneur, founding D.N. Jones Documentation Service, Inc., first on her own and later with her daughter Marsha who assumed the helm on Nell's final retirement in 1992.
In retirement, Nell continued to offer her time and talents through many community organizations: St. John's Lutheran Church, Arion Auxiliary, Propeller Club and as a founding member of the American Vessel Documentation Association. Nell and husband Joe also enjoyed spending half of their time at a vacation home in Bradenton, FL, where they reconnected with many of their long time friends.
Nell is survived by her two daughters, Marsha Jones Mikell (Edward W.) and Jan Jones both of Mount Pleasant; her niece, Donna Martin Criswell (Corky) and nephew, David Martin; five grandchildren, CeCe Mikell, Tate Mikell, Ashley Gosnell, Katie Ortiz (Carlos), Kelly Hund (Josh); and two great-grandchildren, Cameron Ortiz, Gabriel Ortiz.
