Dorothy Irene Carson Rhett of Charleston, SC, wife of the Rev. Dr. William Paterson Rhett, Jr., died Friday, November 21, 2014. Her Funeral Service will be held Monday, November 24, 2014, in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church St., at 11:00 a.m. Interment, churchyard. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Mrs. William Paterson Rhett was born July 12, 1944 in Concord, NC. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Dixon Carson. She graduated from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in piano, did graduate study at Temple University and received instruction at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Professionally, she was a church organist, the calligraphist for various social organizations and a teacher at The Charleston Day School, where she founded the annual speech contest and taught for twenty-five years. She became a member of Who's Who among America's Teachers in 1992 and was named again in 2004 and 2005 by her students who had graduated.
She was a docent and served on the Women's Council of the Gibbes Museum of Art, various boards of the Junior League of Charleston, The Citadel Faculty Wives Club, board of the Charleston Neighborhood Association, advisor to St. Alban's Episcopal Church of The Citadel, board member of the ECW of St. Philip's Church, Superintendent of the Sunday School, pianist for various events and lector at St. Philip's Church. She loved seeing and hearing about the success of her former students, and she loved taking care of her husband. Mrs. Rhett was an avid supporter of the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston and a sponsor of its International Piano Series and the Charleston Music Fest.
