Dorothy Hamilton McKee, 89, of Johns Island, South Carolina, widow of William J. McKee, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 in the Johns Island Presbyterian Church, 2550 Bohicket Road at 2:00 p.m. Interment, Churchyard. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Dorothy was born December 7, 1924 in Charleston, SC, daughter of the late William Manly Hamilton and the late Marie Andell Hamilton and granddaughter of the late William and Margretha Andell all of Johns Island. Dorothy attended schools on Johns Island and Winthrop College. During WWII, she worked at a local draft board and the Charleston Shipyard. After her husband returned from the wars, she lived for 28 years on James Island where she was quite active in the Presbyterian Church, especially working with the young people. While on James Island, she was a substitute teacher for many years and was the first president of the James Island Yacht Club Auxiliary. After moving to Johns Island, Dorothy became active in community work and politics. She was on the board of the Family Christian Board and Sea Island Republican Women. She received the Order of the Palmetto on October 20, 1994, the highest civilian award given in the state. Dorothy was a long time member of Johns Island Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by daughter-in-law Nancy McKee Plowden (Eddie); former daughter-in-law Kay McKee; five grandsons: Thomas B. McKee Jr., Shawn O. McKee and his wife Rebecca, Travis McKee, Jesse McKee and Will McKee and five great-grandchildren: Michael, Sarah, Anna, John and Andell; one sister, Elizabeth H. Stringfellow of Johns Island and a niece, Marie Beckett. In addition to her husband, Dorothy is predeceased by three sons: William J. McKee, Jr., Thomas B. McKee and John H. McKee and a sister, Margaret H. Beckett.
The family would like to thank her caregivers for their long term devotion and loving care of Mrs. McKee during her illness.
