Dorothy Sokol Kipnis, 88, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Dr. Frank Howard Kipnis, entered into eternal rest Sunday, January 6, 2013. Her funeral service will be held at the graveside Tuesday, January 8, 2013, in Emanu-El Cemetery, Sycamore Avenue (Maryville) at 2:00 p.m.
Mrs. Kipnis was born August 27, 1924, in New York City, daughter of Joseph I. Sokol and Rose Bandremer Sokol. She was raised in Charleston. She attended the College of Charleston and graduated from Temple University. In 1948, she married Frank, and in 1956, they moved to Charleston. Dorothy worked alongside Frank in Kaye Drugs for many years. She also earned her real estate license and worked first as an agent and later as a broker for the Morton Needle Company. She was recognized as a member of the Million Dollar Club, a significant achievement at that time.She was a member of Synagogue Emanu-El, Synagogue Emanu-El Sisterhood, Hadassah, the National Association of Realtors, and the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors.
She is survived by her daughter, Jocelyn H. Kipnis of Bethesda, MD; son, Jonathan I. Kipnis (Risa) of Columbia, MD; daughter, Valerie K. Eisenstein (Eric) of Potomac, MD; brother, Dr. Allen Sokol of Mount Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Frances Halio and Evelyn Needle both of Charleston, SC; and three grandchildren, Rachel Kipnis, Andrew Kipnis (Kimberly), and Seth Eisenstein.
