Doris Belcher Ward

Doris Belcher Ward, 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Samuel Edison Ward entered into eternal rest at her home surrounded by her family Sunday, October 16, 2016. Her Funeral Service will be held Friday October 21, 2016 in John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Doris was born December 27, 1926 in Kimball, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Luther V. Belcher and Manota Surratt Belcher. During World War II, she rolled bandages and knitted sweaters for the soldiers. She graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College 1948, was a charter member of Alpha Xi Delta, a member of The American Guild of Organists, Order of the Eastern Star, former organist and choir director at Kimball United Methodist Church, helped organized The Air Harbor Garden Club, served as President, VP, and secretary of Girl Scout Troop #421 and was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. Doris was a loving, caring, devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Doris was a retired school teacher with Charleston County School District at St. Andrews Parish High School where she served as the Choral Director of the Glee Club. Through her efforts, St. Andrews Glee Club became recognized with numerous local and state awards; with her students selected to attend All State Chorus every year.

She is survived by her two daughters, Kathy Ward Williams (Bruce) of Pawleys Island, SC,Martha Gamble (Rick) of Charleston, SC; son, David E. Ward (Mary Ann) of Pinehurst, NC; sister, Janet B. Gramlich (Paul) of Bellerose, NY; seven grandchildren, Steve Williams, Brooke David, Lindsay Williams, David Ward, Jr., Maren Ward, Michael Gamble, Harrison Gamble; three great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Everett, Cooper, and nephews Keith and Scott Gramlich. Doris was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Charlotte.
