Doris Levkoff Meddin, born in Augusta, Georgia, February 27, 1917, the daughter of Shier Levkoff and Rebecca Rubin Levkoff, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, at her home in Charleston.
She was a graduate of Winthrop College and the University of Southern Illinois. In addition to serving on the South Carolina College of Pharmacy's Board of Advisors, Doris served on the boards of the College of Charleston's School of the Arts and the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center. She was a recipient of the award "Women Who Make a Difference" from the National Council of Jewish Women and recently was inducted as an honorary member of Phi Lambda Sigma Leadership Society of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy - MUSC. Mrs. Meddin has faithfully supported the Medical University for more than twenty years. Her gifts have generously supported the College of Pharmacy, the Storm Eye Institute and the Children's Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which was first established by her brother, Dr. Abner Levkoff. Most recently, Doris established the Doris Levkoff Meddin Medication Safety Education Program. This program educates healthcare professionals and the general public about drug safety to help reduce the number of adverse drug effects experienced by patients statewide.
Mrs. Meddin was a past president of the Charleston Area Mental Health Board, a board member of the City of Charleston Office of Economic Opportunity, and a chair of the UNICEF Year of the Child, Charleston, SC. She was a past president of K.K. Beth Elohim Sisterhood. She initiated many programs that she hoped would make the world a better place, among them are Foster Grandparents Program (now Statewide); Charleston "Pink Ladies" Volunteer Program of the Charleston Section of the National Council of Jewish Women and Charleston Junior League at Roper Hospital; First Children's Play Room and Little Red Wagon Program, Pediatrics, Medical University Hospital; Cornerstone Incorporated for Mentally Ill, Charleston, SC; Relatives Group for Families of Mentally Ill State Hospital Patients; Charleston Chapter of "Safeguards for Seniors" of the National Council of Jewish Women; Teen Parent/Children Bonding Program at the Charleston YWCA; and "Hot Line" Program for Youth on Drugs (formerly known as "Further").
She was given the Distinguished Service Award, Charleston Area Mental Health Association in 1976. In 1986, she was honored by the Society of 1824, Health Sciences Foundation of the Medical University of South Carolina.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Hyman J. Meddin; her sister, Estelle Levkoff Poliakoff; and her brother, Dr. Abner Harris Levkoff. She is survived by her daughters, Eve Meddin Berlinsky (Norman) and Ann Meddin Hellman (Max), both of Charleston; her son, Stuart Levkoff Meddin (Sheryl Bakst) of Atlanta, GA; her grandsons, Douglas Berlinsky, Kenneth Elliott Berlinsky (Elizabeth O'Neal), Brian Alan Hellman (Julie Goldberg), R. Scott Hellman, Shea Adam Meddin (Christina Forte); her granddaughter, Marisa Lauren Meddin; her great-granddaughters, Arielle Rachel Berlinsky, Isabel Mia Hellman, Lela Jane Berlinsky, Meddin Elizabeth Berlinsky; her great-grandson, Aiden Lane Berlinsky; her sister-in-law, Alice Fink Levkoff; many nieces; great nieces and great nephews.
The family wishes to thank her many loving and kind caregivers and the Lutheran Hospice.
Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 30, 2013 in Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Reform Temple, 90 Hasell Street, at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
