Doris Irene McLendon

Doris Irene Rogers McLendon entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 8, 2018 in Charleston, S.C. The family will receive friends Saturday, June 16, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00p.m. where her funeral service will be conducted at 3:00p.m. Burial following will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, with Reverend Barry Owens officiating.

Born on September 13, 1920 in Ridgeville, S.C., she was the oldest daughter of Beverly Wesley Rogers and his wife, Alice Zelma Owens Rogers of Ridgeville. She attended the schools in Ridgeville and graduated with honors in 1937. After graduation she went to Columbia College where she participated in a number of organizations including the much-acclaimed Columbia College Glee Club and the local social sorority, Lambda Epsilon Theta. In her junior year she transferred to the University of South Carolina in pursuit of special courses in Library Science and other courses not offered at Columbia College, she graduated in February 1941, after which she taught school in Trenton, S.C. and later in her hometown.

On December 31, 1942, she married Lt. Hinkle McLendon, Jr. of Monroe, N.C. in the Southern Methodist Church in Ridgeville. He had graduated from The Citadel and was returning from a year's active duty in Hawaii. They were stationed at Camp Davis, N.C., Savannah, GA., and Ft. Meade, MD.

"Dot", as she was called by family and relatives, had a wonderful life. Early in her marriage she lived at the seaside in Wilmington, N.C. and Savannah, GA., and later in the mountains in Blowing Rock, and Boone, N.C. and Greenville, S.C., and then Charleston. She loved to travel and was able to visit every continent except Australia. She also made two trips around the world, one with her daughter, Carol, and the other with her husband, Mac.

Doris was interested in history and genealogy and was a member of a number of local organizations, including the Charleston Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogy Society, the S.C. Historical Society, the Rebecca Motte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Charleston Library Society, the Charles Towne Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, the Huguenot Society, the Society of the Descendants of Colonial Clergy and the First Families of South Carolina, 1670-1700. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir for more than fifteen years.

She is survived by her son, James Hinkle McLendon, his son, John Paul and wife Nina, grandsons, Jackson Boone McLendon, and Alan Clark McLendon, her daughter, Carol McLendon Porter, her husband, RADM Thomas John Porter, their son, Jonathan Scott Porter and his wife, Krystal, and grandsons; Rhett Thomas Porter and Reid McLendon Porter. She was preceded in death by her sister Anna Grace Taylor and her brother, Beverly W. Rogers.
