Doris Jowers Johnson, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Florence, SC, wife of the late Harry Carthell Johnson passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, in the Mount Pleasant Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. The family will also receive friends on Friday, August 19, 2016 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home, 2402 S. Irby Street, Florence, from 10:30-11:30 am. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 noon in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Doris was born in Blackville, SC on June 1, 1923, the daughter of the late Lennie and Annie Laurie Hair Jowers. She graduated from Blackville High School in 1941 and married Harry Carthell Johnson of Williston, SC, on December 14, 1941, one week after Pearl Harbor. They moved to Charleston, SC, where their only child Harriet Johnson Graham was born. When her husband was drafted into World War II, she returned to Blackville to be with her parents during the war. After the war, they moved to Florence, SC, where she was employed by the Florence County School district as a supervisor of Satellite Food Services, a pilot program for the state based upon the airlines' methods of delivery. In that capacity, she supervised about sixty-five employees including the drivers. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Florence, a member of the Florentine League of Wives of Railroad Men, The Wild Rose Garden Club, and other social clubs. She moved to The Palms of Mt. Pleasant in 2006. In Mt. Pleasant she attended the First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Faith Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her daughter, Harriet Graham (Charlie); two grandchildren: Carter Graham and Quincy Busker (Clay); two great-grandchildren: Charlie Graham III and Graham Busker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers and their wives, Wilbur (Marion), Charlie (Dorothy), Earl (Doris), James (Virginia), Emmett (Dixie) and Joe (Sarah).
