Doris P. Hazen

December 18, 1931 — May 24, 2010

Doris Juanita Phillips Swain Hazen, 78, wife of the late Lawrence Charles Hazen of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010.  The relatives and friends of Doris Hazen are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Monday, May 31, 2010 in J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.


Mrs. Hazen was born December 18, 1931 in Greenville, SC, daughter of the late William Phillips and Cora Woodall Phillips.  Retired as a Registered Nurse, Mrs. Hazen was named Nurse of the Year in 1950, while serving at Greenville Psychiatric Hospital.  She also worked with the American Red Cross for many years, and managed the first Bloodmobile in SC.


Doris was a hard worker who enjoyed indoor gardening and gatherings of her family and friends.  Doris and her first husband, Ray, operated Hudson's Pavilion on the Isle of  Palms for eight years.  Hudson's was "home-away-from-home" for many young submariners and Navy personnel.  During the winter months, Hudson's was a gathering place for Doris and Ray's friends, where they enjoyed holiday parties and get-togethers.  Doris and Ray also owned and operated Buccaneer Cottages on the Isle of Palms.  In the later years, the Cottages became known as "Swainland."   Doris and Ray were married for twenty-five years until Ray's death in February 1979.


In 1981 Doris wed Lawrence "Mike" Hazen.  Together they enjoyed sailing, traveling, and Mike's children, Doris' step-children Lawrence Michael Hazen of Brandon, MS and Lynn Michelle Harrison of Summerville, SC.  Doris and Mike were married for twenty-five years, until his death in October 2006.


She is survived by her children, Gail Pohl and her husband, Richard of the Isle of Palms, SC, Raymond Swain III of John's Island, SC, William W. Swain and his wife, Jane of Martinez, CA, Mark O. Swain of John's Island, SC, and Carol Lynn Swain and her husband, Donald Winkle of Santa Rosa, CA; her grandchildren, Audrieanna Himel and her husband, Casey of Columbia, SC, Caroline Collins and her husband, Alan Brent of Charleston, SC, Raymond R. Swain IV of Charleston, SC, Jazlyn and Chelsea and William Swain, all of Clarksburg, WV, and Tyler Owen of John's Island, SC; one great-grandson, Cameron Himel of Columbia, SC; two brothers, Kenneth Phillips and his wife, Dee of Greenville, SC, and Anthony Phillips of Greenville, SC; one sister, Jean Ann Carson of Greenville, SC; and her many nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond R. Swain, Jr.


The family would like to extend their special appreciation to the following for the dedicated care they provided Mrs. Hazen:  Drs. Rex and Anna Morgan and their staff, Dr. Edgar Weiss and Dr. Fred Michael of MUSC, the Assisted Living staff at Somerby of Mt. Pleasant, especially Nurse Jottie Paporello, the ICU nurses of East Cooper Medical Center, especially Nurse Douglas "Randy" Randinelli, all the staff at Savannah Grace Skilled Nursing Facility, and special caregivers, Delphine Walker, Ernestine Hutchinson, and Shirley Dias.
