Doris Hodges "Sunny" Hamrick died Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community, Charleston, SC. She was born November 26, 1923 in Claremore, Oklahoma and called Charleston home for 70 years.
The widow of Dr. Clarence Thomas "Buddy" Hamrick, Jr., she attended Oklahoma University and the College of Charleston. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston, was involved in civic organizations and the Charleston Dental Auxiliary.
Of all the gifts she gave to her children, the most significant was loving them through her love of Jesus Christ. The gift of Sunny's spiritual heritage will always be their greatest treasure.
She enjoyed travel, music, art and literature, and taught her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to share these loves. Her friends and family will remember her as an intelligent, sensitive, thoughtful woman who lived out her care and concern for others. Her love for her family and husband was legendary.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years; by her parents, the Rev. Samuel B. Hodges and Leila Wright Hodges; and five siblings.
Survivors include six children, Ellen H. Hollingsworth (Dr. John) and Nancy H. Ravenel, both of Charleston, Dr. Clarence Thomas Hamrick, III (Jan) and Dr. Eric Hamrick (Whitney), both of Greenville, SC, Anne H. Cochet (The Rev. Alan) of Oxford, MS and Elizabeth H. Coleman (Dr. Rutledge) of Jacksonville, FL. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Melissa F. Brown (Todd) of Charleston, B. Owen Ravenel, III (Shay) of Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Willis "Trey" Fuller, III (Jenna) of Anderson, SC, Kate R. Reid (Scott) of New York, NY, Elizabeth Cochet (Jon Wilson) of Santa Monica, CA, Dr. J. Rutledge Coleman, III (Meg) of Asheville, NC, A.J. Cochet (Jennifer) of Oxford, MS, Natalie H. Halt (Frederic) of Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Thomas H. Coleman (Kathryn) of Summerville, Collins C. Ryan (Rooster) of Melbourne, FL, C.T. "Rusty" Hamrick, IV of Greenville, SC, John "Justin" F. Hamrick of Greenville, SC, C. Preston Hamrick (Stephanie) of Charleston, and Kathryn A. Hamrick of Greenville, SC and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at 10:30 am in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden with The Reverends Alan J. Cochet, Joseph DiRaddo and Frank D. Russ, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Bishop Gadsden and interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
The family expresses deep appreciation to the incredible staff at Bishop Gadsden for the loving care and professional attention given to Sunny as a resident.
