Doris Elizabeth Legare Dayhoff, age 97, was born on Sullivan's Island, SC. She went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at her home in Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry E. Dayhoff, her brothers, Fred Legare, Jr. and Louis Legare, her nephew Allen Legare, and a grandson she loved dearly , Creighton Dayhoff.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Dayhoff Smith (Terry), son, Bobby Dayhoff (Karen), grandchildren Elizabeth Smith Darrah (Jason), Benjamin Smith (Anna) and Ryan Dayhoff (Sydney), great grandchildren, Brenden & Riley Darrah, Emsley & Harrison Smith, Peyton, and Reagan Dayhoff. Also niece and nephew Michelle Legare Sullivan (Jeff) & Fred Legare, III.
Born on Sullivan's Island to Fred H. & Henrietta Moore Legare, Doris grew up on the island, a true island girl! Doris was a graduate of Moultrie High School and attended Winthrop University. In 1949, Doris married a soldier, previously stationed at Fort Moultrie, Harry E. Dayhoff. They made their home on Isle of Palms where they raised their two children, Linda and Bob. Doris held many jobs in her early years. Working first for the Solomon Law Firm in Charleston, she was asked to head up the newly formed headquarters of Storm Management and Insurance. After a home sick visit by the new island doctor, Dr. George Durst, he convinced her to work for him in his new island office as secretary and nurse.
After having their children, Doris became a stay-at-home Mom until they left the nest. She then worked in the office of American Moving company until retirement. There was nothing that she couldn't do! Doris and Harry both enjoyed retirement, traveling all over the US!
She was an active member of several organizations, the Sullivan's Island Baptist Church since 1954, the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, and last but not least, the Island Girls Lunch group. Doris enjoyed telling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren about her carefree island childhood. Her favorite saying was "Once you get sand in your shoes you will never leave. If you do, you will return!"
