Doris Joan Chaplin, aged 88, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, August 20, 2026. Family and friends are invited to her funeral service, which will be held at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 2:00 pm, followed by interment at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on the same day from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the chapel.
Born on May 20, 1938, in Lake City, South Carolina, Doris was the daughter of the late Harry Wyman Cockfield and Bessie Mae Wells Cockfield. Doris attended Coker College and then joined Southern Bell Telephone Company in Charleston. Her work at Southern Bell led to meeting the love of her life, Robert Chaplin, and the couple began their 60 years of marriage in 1961. Doris and Robert moved to Columbia, SC where they raised their daughter and then returned to Charleston when Robert retired. Those retirement years were filled with travel and being involved in the lives of their three precious grandchildren: Big Buddy, Princess, and Peanut. A devoted homemaker, she dedicated her life to her family.
Doris is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Catherine O'Connor (Jim) of Charleston, SC; her sister, Harriet Thomas (John) of North Charleston, SC; her grandchildren, James O'Connor, Jordan O'Connor, and Erin O'Connor Dixon (Jacen); her nephew, John Thomas of North Charleston; her sister-in-law, Ellen Chaplin; and numerous other cherished family members.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Warren Chaplin.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Fisher House Foundation at fisherhouse.org.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Messages of condolence may be shared with the family through their website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.
